Our Fire Protection team plays a vital role in keeping Lincolnshire safe by reducing fire risks in the community. We work proactively to ensure compliance with fire safety legislation through audits, inspections, and enforcement, covering a wide range of premises from commercial properties to residential buildings. The team provides expert advice on fire safety measures, collaborates with local authorities and partner agencies, and supports complex projects to improve public safety. By influencing building regulations, licensing applications, and planning matters, we help shape safer environments. Our work also includes investigating complaints, reducing unwanted fire signals, and supporting fire investigations—all with the goal of protecting lives, property, and the environment.
About the role
As a Fire Safety Inspector with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, you will play an important role in protecting our communities by helping to enforce fire safety laws and reduce fire risk across Lincolnshire. You’ll carry out detailed fire safety inspections and audits of a wide range of premises, ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation and providing clear, practical advice to businesses and building owners on how to reduce hazards and improve safety.
Working closely with colleagues across prevention, protection and operational teams, as well as partner agencies, you will support risk-based inspection programmes, contribute to targeted fire safety initiatives, and help shape fire risk management in the built environment. There will be a requirement to:
- Examine and annotate plans, applying relevant codes of practice and technical guidance having due regard to the circumstances of each case.
- Assist with complex fire safety projects.
- Enforce fire safety legislation in accordance with service policy, collect evidence, assist with the preparation of prosecution cases and give evidence where appropriate.
- There will be a requirement to maintain close working relationships with external agencies and local authority partners and conduct joint inspections as appropriate.
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by promoting fire safety best practice, assisting with investigations, and ensuring that statutory duties are delivered effectively to preserve life and protect property.
This role will be based out of our Fire and Police Headquarters in Nettleham, Lincoln but we are seeking individuals that could cover the South and West of the County (Grantham and Lincoln areas).
About you
Essential Criteria:
- Positive interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to use Microsoft office applications, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to analyse and interpret data to assess risk
- Up to date in depth knowledge of Fire Safety legislation, Data protection / security of data associated technical guides and codes of practice.
- Compliant with data protection and security
- Experience in the enforcement of fire safety
- Nationally recognised fire safety qualification, e.g. Fire Safety Level 4 Diploma or equivalent * Please note for individuals without this qualification there would be the expectation to be trained up to this level
- Hold a current valid UK driving licence
- Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development and competence
- Willingness to work flexibly to, occasionally outside of normal office hours including evenings and/or weekends
Desirable Criteria:
- Knowledge and understanding of risk management processes and their application.
- Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation.
- Experience delivering training to individuals and groups
- Ability to present complex, divergent technical fire safety issues to a variety of audiences
- Experience of mentoring and developing people
- IOSH Managing Safety qualification or equivalent
- Health & Safety at Risk Management Qualification
- Diploma, Degree or other relevant management qualification commensurate with the role
- NEBOSH General Certificate
